How to remove tab groups on Chrome Android

If you are an extensive internet user, and your browser of choice is Chrome, you must have noticed the tab grouping feature on Chrome, and that’s really handy if you have multiple tabs opened at the same time. Tab grouping makes organizing tabs a lot easier, and that’s one thing that you should in fact use on Chrome if you aren’t using it already.

However, if you use Chrome on your smartphone or your Android, the same feature is available, and I personally don’t like it on Android. The whole reason, why tab grouping is neat on Chrome for desktop is more or less lost on smartphones, as most people have the habit of opening tabs, and not closing them. So, if you too hate chrome tab groups on Android, I am here with the solution to get rid of it.

One more reason to disable tab groups on Chrome for Android is the options that you get by long tapping on a link. The option to open the link in a new tab is gone, and it is replaced by something that says, ‘Open in new tab in group’. Alternatively, you can open the same in an incognito window, which isn’t relevant all the time.

Steps to disable tab groups on Chrome Android

By disabling tab groups on Chrome for Android, you can not only get rid of Chome tab groups, but you can also get back the ‘Open in new tab’ option, which I personally think, is much better than the new yet, not so useful ‘Open in new tab in group’.

Step 1:

Open Google Chrome on Android, and type in the following link i.e. ‘chrome://flags/#enable-tab-grid-layout’ in the address bar. If you are reading this post right on your smartphone, you can directly copy the link.

Now, tap on the ‘Default’ button, and select ‘Enabled Without auto group’.

Step 2:

Next type in the following link, i.e. ‘chrome://flags/#enable-start-surface’ in the address bar again, and replace the ‘Default’ option by tapping on the button, with ‘Enabled Single Surface V2 Finale’.

Finally, tap on the ‘Relaunch Now’ button, and now you have disabled tab grouping on Chrome for mobile.

However, if it isn’t working, clear Chrome from your recent tasks, and now, start Chrome to find Chrome tab groups gone.

Now, by long tapping on a link, you can find both the ‘Open in new tab’, and the ‘Open in new tab in group’ together.

If a link is configured to automatically open in a new tab, from now on, it will open in a completely new tab, and the two tabs will no longer be grouped.

There are indeed some features, which should be exclusive to PCs, while others should be reserved for mobile-only. Now, you know, how to disable tab grouping on Chrome for phones. However, the tab grouping feature can still be useful, if you are using Android on a tab. You can enable the tab grouping feature again by opening the links in Step 1 and Step 2 and setting them to ‘Default’.

So that was all about how you can disable the tab grouping feature on Chrome for smartphones. Do you have any questions? Feel free to comment on the same below.
