How to use Google Pay for contactless payments like Visa Tap and Pay

Online payments are replacing cash for good, and if you predominantly use a credit or debit card, you can also use the same for paying to merchants. But, the day is not far when swiping cards will be a thing of the past, thanks to contactless payments. You might be familiar with ‘Tap & Pay’ that is promoted by VISA. However, you can also leap into contactless payments using apps like Samsung Pay.

But for making contactless payments using credit or debit cards, having a Samsung smartphone is not mandatory, as it is the technology that matters. If you are having a modern Android smartphone, obviously with NFC support, you can use contactless payments, thanks to Google Pay. So, today, I will be talking about, how to use Google Pay contactless payment in a store, or in other situations, replacing your contactless debit or credit card.

How to use Google Pay for contactless payments?

Open Google Pay on your Android phone, and tap on the profile icon, which is at the top right corner of the Google Pay UI.

Now, tap on ‘Pay businesses’ in the ‘Set up payment methods’ section. Tap on ‘Proceed’ in the message that will appear next.

Next, you have to enter the 16-digit card number, the other details, viz. the expiry date, CVV. and tap on ‘Save’. Sorry, I can’t show the screenshot, as a screenshot can’t be taken here due to Android’s security policy, and in fact, this information is personal.

In the next step, the issuer terms will be displayed. Just tap on ‘More’, and finally tap ‘Accept & continue’ to proceed.

Now, the ownership of the card will be verified. You can see the available options for verification, but the ‘Text message’ option is the simplest one, and that will be selected by default. So, just tap ‘Continue’.

In the last step, a six-digit verification code will be sent to your mobile number, and after you enter that, tap the ‘Submit’ button.

Finally, it will take a few seconds to add the card, and you can then avail the Google Pay contactless payments facility right on your Android. But, can you use Google Pay without NFC? Yes, you definitely can, but contactless payments are not possible on Google Pay, if you don’t have NFC on your device.

So, that was all about, how to use Google Pay at a store and pay using your Debit or Credit card. Even though Google Pay adds a Samsung Pay-like feature to Android phones with NFC support, the sad part is not all cards are supported by Google Pay at this moment. Only Visa cards from a few banks are supported, and I eagerly want that this list to skyrocket. Even though Samsung Pay doesn’t support all the cards under the sun, but the list is at least bigger than cards supported by Google Pay. Perhaps, Google Pay will go beyond just supporting Visa cards in the future, but that is yet to be seen. If you want to know how to use Google Pay on Samsung, you first need to select Google Pay as the default app for contactless payments.
