How to enable end-to-end encrypted chat backups on WhatsApp

One cool feature about WhatsApp that most users already know about, is the end-to-end encryption. What it simply means is, only you, or better your device, and the recipient’s device can only decrypt or see the messages, and nobody else in between, not even WhatsApp. That’s the claim made at least by WhatsApp.

But, this was applicable only to WhatsApp messages, not the chat backups. So, if you used this feature in the past, end-to-end encryption was a joke. But recently WhatsApp addressed this issue, and now you can get WhatsApp end-to-end chat backups. How? I will explain how to enable this feature, today on InkedFreedom.

So, without any further delay, let’s get started with how to get the latest WhatsApp end-to-end chat backup encryption.

Enabling encrypted backups on WhatsApp

Open WhatsApp, and tap on the triple-dot icon on the top right corner of the UI. Next, tap on ‘Settings’.

In the ‘Settings’ menu, tap on the
‘Chats’ option.

The second-last option will be ‘Chat backup’. Just tap on that.

Below the backup button, you should be able to find ‘End-to-end encrypted backup’, which should be turned off by default. Just tap on the option to navigate into it.

Here, you have to tap on the ‘Turn on’ button to enable WhatsApp encrypted backups.

Next, you have two options to encrypt the chat backups on WhatsApp. You can either create a password or a 63-digit encryption key. Just go with the first option as that is the convenient one.

In the next step, you have to enter the password two times by tapping on the ‘Next’ button, as you do while creating other passwords.

Finally, tap on the ‘Create’ button, and the first backup process should begin shortly.

Well, that’s how you can enable encrypted WhatsApp chat backups. The absence of WhatsApp end-to-end encrypted backups was a big flaw when it already allows end-to-end encryption in chats. If you are not getting the WhatsApp encrypted chat backup feature, you should update the app. So, if you are worried about, is WhatsApp chat backup encrypted? The answer is yes. However, unlike end-to-end encrypted chats, you have to manually enable WhatsApp end-to-end encrypted chat backups.

So, in case your Google Drive account is compromised for some reason, the private chats are still private, and you will not have to worry about your WhatsApp messages being in the hacker’s hands.
