How to save contacts to never lose them again

Changing phones these days every year or two is a common phenomenon. However, if you have the habit of losing contacts every time you change your phone, that is indeed a hindrance to your smooth switching from an old phone to your new phone. You can identify a handful of contacts after opening WhatsApp, from the display pictures, but what about others. There must be a way to save your contact forever, and yes, there is!

There’s a simple way to never lose your contacts, no matter how many contacts you have, or how frequently you change your phone. You do not need to manually back up and restore contacts, every time you change your phone, which is an old method. You simply need to do nothing at the time of switching, with this golden rule to save your contacts

So, let’s find out, what’s the golden rule to never lose your contacts and save your contacts forever.

While saving new contacts

If you are using an Android phone, you must be signed in to at least one Google account to access Google services.

Now, when you try to add a new contact, you simply have to change the storage location of the particular contact.

You can save the contact to several places, like the SIM card, device memory, or, on your Google account. Depending upon the model, and device manufacturer, the user interface might be different, and the option can be located at a different place, but the option must be there.

If you have additional accounts, say Samsung account, or any other account that supports contact sync, you can also find the option to save the contact in such accounts. Just choose one of the Google accounts from the list.

But if you do not stick to fanboyism, and try new devices, better stick to the Google account, as that is supported on all Android devices.

Now that you have saved the contact on your Google account, you can see the saved contact on any device signed in with the same Google account.

However, make sure contacts sync is enabled across all the smartphones that you have access to, for this functionality to work.

To ensure sync is enabled, search for ‘Sync’ within device settings, or from the quick toggles, and choose the Google account. Now see whether there is a tick against contacts.

Once you save one contact to your Google account, the next contacts will be saved to your Google account by default, if you don't change it manually. However, you still have the option to change the storage location from the drop-down menu in most cases.

You can also view and edit all the contacts on your PC, laptop, or any other device on Google by visiting contacts.google.com.

What about the old contacts

Well, you must be having several contacts and, they too, need to be on a Google account, and hence your new device.

If you are using a modern Android handset, and by modern I mean, if it is not more than 7 to 8 years old, there must be an option to copy all your device and SIM contacts to your Google account. You should find the option with contact settings, that can be accessed either from a triple-dot icon, hamburger icon, on the top-left corner.

On Samsung’s Contacts app, you can find the option under ‘Manage contacts’. There you can find ‘Sync contacts’, and choose the Google accounts or any other account that you have, to sync all your contacts.

However, if you are using the Google Contacts app, just head to
‘Settings’, tap on ‘Google Contacts sync settings’, and then choose the Google account, where you want to sync all your contacts.

Now, you can see the different settings to sync both SIM and device contacts by tapping on each of the options.

This is a nifty yet beautiful feature to seamlessly switch between devices without worrying about losing your contacts. Everybody should use this feature, and keep the headache away.

How do I add a contact to my Gmail account?

This question might seem irrelevant, as most people don’t save email contacts these days. Once you email a person or business on Gmail, the email contact will be available forever, no matter whether you need it or not. However, knowing how to add a Gmail contact can still be useful, if somebody is sharing the email address, or just want to see other contact details of the person.

Just try adding a new contact on your Android device, and at the top, choose the Gmail account, where the contact needs to be saved. Proceed with adding a new contact the same way as I discussed while adding a new mobile number.

Now, enter the name of the person, and scroll down to see the email address field. Add the email address, and you can alternatively add a mobile number, landline number, or even more.

Well, if you are using your organization’s Gmail account, and want to know, how do I add a contact to Gmail from the web, you can do that by visiting ‘contacts.google.com’. On visiting the link, sign in with you credentials, and click on the option that says ‘Create contact’. Then click on ‘Create a contact’.

Here, enter the details that include the person’s name, email address, phone number, etc. Click on ‘Show more’ to add other details like anniversary, internet calling details, postal address, etc. After you are done entering the necessary details, click on ‘Save’.

Now, your contact is saved safely on the Google servers. That was all about, how to add a contact to Gmail from Android and the web. If you are searching for how to add a contact to Gmail, by visiting Gmail, you won’t find any option to save your contacts. Gmail is just the place for your email requirements. This is a nifty feature offered by Google, where you can save all your contacts in one place.

So, that was all about how to never lose your contacts again. You can also sync your contacts with iCloud if you are within the Apple ecosystem. But you can still pull all your contacts from your Google account, on an iPhone, and use certain apps if you want to switch platforms, as iCloud is not supported on Android.
