How to install Chrome on Ubuntu. Step-by-step guide to install Google Chrome on Ubuntu


Google Chrome is the most popular web browser today for its availability across multiple platforms, cool extensions, user-friendliness, features, and whatnot. But if you use Ubuntu on your desktop or laptop, recently switched to it, or have a computer lying around, Ubuntu can give a new life to it. 

However, if you want to surf the internet on your Ubuntu computer, using your favorite browser, installing Chrome on an Ubuntu system is not as easy as installing it on your smartphone or Windows. But, it is neither too tough, on the other hand. So, today on InkedFreedom, I will discuss how to install Chrome on Ubuntu. 

You first need to download Google Chrome on your Ubuntu computer, and hence install it. I will talk about the complete process step by step.

How to install Chrome on Ubuntu? The complete guide

Step1: Downloading Google Chrome on Ubuntu

Step 1.1: Visit the following link, and click on ‘Download Chrome’.


Step 1.2: Select the download package, which is system-specific on the Linux platform. For Ubuntu, select the ‘64 bit .deb’ package, for Debian and Ubuntu, which is self-explanatory. Once you are done, click on ‘Accept and Install’.


Step 1.3: If you are new to Ubuntu, you might be using Mozilla Firefox to download Chrome. So, select ‘Save file’, and then click on ‘OK’. If you are using a different browser, make sure you are downloading the file, and not trying to open it.


Once the download is complete, we can proceed with the process to install Google Chrome on Ubuntu.

Step 2: Installing Google Chome on Ubuntu

Step 2.1: Navigate to the ‘Downloads’ folder on your default file explorer, as it is the place where Ubuntu keeps all the downloaded files if you haven’t changed the location. Then, right-click on the empty space, and click on ‘Open in Terminal’.


Step 2.2: In the terminal window, type in the following command and hit the enter key.

sudo dpkg -i google-chrome-stable_current_amd64.deb

*Depending upon, when you are following this tutorial, the filename can be different as there might be a newer version. You can use the ‘ls’ command to list the files in the ‘Downloads’ folder, and use that name instead.

Step 2.3: You might have to enter the user password, as per Ubuntu’s security. Just type in the password, and hit the enter key. But the password will not be displayed.

After the installation is complete, the prompt will appear, as shown in the screenshot below.


Now that you know how to install Chrome on Ubuntu, you can open Google Chrome on Ubuntu from the apps section.

After you install Google Chrome on Ubuntu, you can sign in with your Google account to access your saved bookmarks, and history, and feel at home. Just like Google Chrome on Windows, you can have multiple profiles for different purposes.
