How to play old-school retro games on your Android? Get the most classic retro games on your smartphone with Super Retro Mega Wars

The gaming industry has evolved a lot since the invention of the first computer game, and we cannot see the evolution process ending anytime soon. In the crowd of AAA titles releasing every day, and fancy pay-to-win titles, it is still fun to play some of the classic retro games of the golden era. If you are like-minded and want to play games without downloading, today on InkedFreedom, I will talk about one open-source app to help you play several classic retro games.

It is not easy to find a retro games store nearby, where you can buy consoles, but thankfully you can use the app I will discuss here, to play some of the best old-school retro games right on your Android. As this is an open-source app you will not find it on the Google Play Store, however, there's a place. Don’t worry, I will talk about that store too, and will guide you through the complete process of getting started with the retro gaming app.

So, without any further delay, let’s get started with how you can play the classic retro games on your Android.

Downloading F-Droid, the open-source app store for Android

Download the F-Droid Android app store from its website. F-Droid offers free and open-source appd and games for Android across several categories.

As you are downloading an APK, the browser might warn you against the possible risks. However, you can proceed without any worries as long as you are downloading F-Droid using the link I have given.

Now open the 'Downloads' folder on your Android File Manager, and tap on 'F-Droid.apk' to proceed with installing the store.

If you haven't installed any APK using your File Manager app earlier, you first have to add your file manager as a trusted source to install APK files. Simply tap on 'Settings' to proceed with making the necessary changes.

Now, enable your file manager app to add it to trusted sources for installing APK files from unknown sources.

I am using Solid Explorer here, however, you can use a different app based on your choice.

You should instantly find the option to install F-Droid on your Android. Tap on 'Install' to proceed.

Downloading Super Retro Mega Wars from the F-Droid store

Now that the installation of F-Droid is complete, open the F-Droid app from the app drawer. On opening the app for the very first time, it will take some time to update the repositories. Just wait for a minute or two. Once ready, tap on the search icon, and type in 'Super Retro Mega Wars'.

The app will be suggested even before you type in the full name. First, download the app using the download icon, and wait for it to complete.

After the download process is complete, you again have to add F-Droid as a trusted source in order to install apps downloaded using F-Droid.

At the time of installing Super Retro Mega Wars, you will be prompted to add F-Droid to trusted sources to install unknown apps. The process is similar to how you added your file manager app to the list.

After you are done adding F-Droid to the trusted list, you will instantly get the option to install Super Retro Mega Wars. Simply tap on 'Install' to proceed.

Getting started with Super Retro Mega Wars

After the installation is complete, open Super Retro Mega Wars from the app drawer.

You first have to choose whether you want to play solo, just like we all used to do in our childhood days, play a multiplayer match or host a game locally on your Wi-Fi network.

If you choose 'Solo', you will get the option to play a few classic old-school retro games, as shown in the screenshot below.

Here are a few screenshots of some of the best games on Super Retro Mega Wars.

If your favorite game is yet not on the list, you can suggest your game, using the ‘Vote’ option by tapping on the coming soon button.

You will instantly be redirected to the Super Retro Mega Wars GitHub page. Here you can report any existing issue, or request a new game.

It was never this easy to get access to all the classic retro games right on your Android. If you want to enjoy old-school retro games without downloading games of every category, Super Retro Mega Wars is the way to go.

I personally feel there is scope for the developers to optimize the controls for touch-screen devices. There could be swipe gestures instead of tap gestures as it is impossible to offer the same level of tactile feedback that we used to get pressing actual buttons, on a touch interface.

Even though the game is totally free to download and play on F-Droid, you can also get Super Retro Mega Wars for just Rs. 55 on the Google Play Store. If you don’t want to go through the hassles of downloading a third-party store, and go through all the steps, you can get the game by supporting the developer by paying the price of a cup of coffee from the Google Play Store.

I personally think Super Retro Mega Wars is not just a game. It is a concept that will improve with time. Do you have anything to add? Feel free to comment on the same below.
