How to block a website on Google Chrome both temporarily, and permanently

It is quite natural these days to get distracted at work if you have a fast internet connection at your office or home. However, if you want, you can easily keep those distractions away, on Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, or any other Chromium-based web browser. You just need to recognize the websites that distract you, say Facebook, YouTube, etc., and you are almost ready to go.

Next, you need to add the URLs to Google Chrome and bid goodbye to all kinds of distractions. That said, today on InkedFreedom, I will talk about how to block a website on Google Chrome, or any other Chromium-based web browser to keep all your distractions away and concentrate on your work.

So, without any further delay, let’s get started with how to block a website on Google Chrome.

How to block a website on Google Chrome permanently?

If there are certain websites, or certain categories of websites that you never want to visit ever again, say dating websites, infectious websites, etc., here's how to block such websites permanently.

Open the Chrome Web Store and search for Website Blocker for Chrome. You can also visit the link to directly land on the page, where you can download the extension. Click on the ‘Add to Chrome’ button, and then click on ‘Add extension’.

Now that the extension is downloaded and installed, you can get started with how to block a website on Google Chrome. Click on the extension in the extensions area. If the extension is hidden in the extensions menu, click on the extensions menu, and then click on the pin icon just beside the name of the extension. This will help you manage the block list easily.

Now that the Website Blocker is appearing persistently, visit the website that you want to block. Say, for example, you want to block facebook.com permanently. Visit facebook.com, click on the Website Blocker icon, and then click on ‘Block this Site’.

You can see the block list anytime by clicking on the Website Blocker icon, and then by clicking on ‘Edit Block List’.

While this might seem inconvenient to visit a website, and then block it, there’s another way to block a website on Google Chrome temporarily, say, while at work, or while you are studying.

How to block a website on Google Chrome temporarily?

It isn’t always necessary to block a website on Google Chrome permanently. Blocking a website temporarily is something most people need every now and then. To get started, use the following link to download and install Pomegranate, which is a website blocking timer, available for Google Chrome and other Chromium-based web browsers.

Now that you have downloaded and installed Pomegranate on your Google Chrome web browser, pin it to the extensions area, exactly the way you did with the Website Blocker extension.

Now, click on the Pomegranate extension, type in the URL, and then click on the small ‘+’ icon to add the URL.

Simply add all the websites that you want to block temporarily, and let Pomegranate do the rest.

When you want to block the websites temporarily, click on the Pomegranate icon, and then click on ‘Start Timer’.

By default, blocking will time out after 20 minutes, which is the default time. If you try to visit any blocked website during this time, Pomegranate will display certain quotes to encourage you to focus on what you are doing.

If you want to extend the timer, simply click on ‘Pause Timer’, and that way, you won’t be able to visit the blocked websites, unless you resume the timer, and the set time is exhausted.

Click on the settings cog to configure the settings associated with the extension.

Here, you can change the timer, set a particular website, where you will automatically be redirected if you try to access a blocked website, and do a lot more.

So, that’s how to block a website on Google Chrome temporarily.

Besides these two ways of blocking a website on Google Chrome, you can find additional extensions too, but Website Blocker and Pomegranate are easy to use and can help you focus on your work or studies.
