Here’s a brief guide on how to disable read receipts on WhatsApp.

Even though this method is the easiest way to see WhatsApp statuses anonymously, it isn’t without shortcomings. By disabling read receipts, you won’t understand when your messages are being read, and you can’t even see who is seeing your statuses too. If you are OK with all the shortcomings, this is the simplest way. 

Furthermore, as you can effortlessly enable or disable read receipts, you can simply disable read receipts just when you want to see WhatsApp statuses anonymously, and enable read receipts thereafter.

See the statuses within File Explorer

Every WhatsApp status that contains some images or videos is saved in your internal memory for 24 hours, within the following directory. 

However, these files are hidden, and hence, you have to make the hidden files visible to see the images and videos shared as statuses by your contacts. Based on the file explorer app you are using, the method to make hidden files visible is going to be different. But, you should get it from the triple-dot icon on the top right corner or from the hamburger menu in the most popular file managers.

You simply need to be connected to the internet for this trick to work. One thing to note here is that you can see the statuses in the mentioned directory as long as they are available on WhatsApp, or for 24 hours since they are made live on WhatsApp.

While these two are the best ways to view WhatsApp statuses anonymously, here’s one more way that I will not recommend, for obvious concerns.

Using status downloader apps (not recommended)

Android is an open platform, and due to a fairly low entry barrier, we can find an app for most purposes, even though there might be issues with some of them. One such category of apps offers the ability to download WhatsApp statuses. With the help of such an app, you can both view the statuses anonymously, and save the images and videos to internal memory to see them later.

While this might seem great at first glance, saving WhatsApp status goes against WhatsApp’s policies. Furthermore, these apps can access all your internal storage, as these apps require permission to see and modify the contents of the internal storage for obvious reasons. These apps also come with annoying ads that add to the problem. That said, I won’t recommend such apps, but the choice is all yours.

Turn off Wi-Fi and mobile data or enable airplane mode (no longer working)

Previously it was possible to turn off the internet (Wi-Fi and mobile data), and see the status. That way, your name will not be displayed in the list of contacts who have seen the status. But in the recent versions of WhatsApp, your activities on WhatsApp will be updated right after you go online again, and your anonymity is gone.

But you can still try this method, just to check whether it works for you.
